Safeguarding at The Salvation Army

Safe people

Everyone matters

At The Salvation Army, keeping people safe is a shared responsibility. Every person involved helps create a positive and welcoming experience for others.

We have six main groups who play an important role in making our programs and activities safe and successful:

1. Corps Officers or site managers

These are the people in charge of each location. They might be Salvation Army officers (like lieutenants, captains or majors) or employees. Their job is to:

  • Set the tone and standards for safety and inclusion
  • Support and train program leaders
  • Make sure admin tasks are completed
  • Complete checks to work with children or vulnerable people
  • Finish safety and conduct training before starting

2. Program / activity leaders

These leaders run programs and activities. Most are volunteers, but some are paid. They are the main point of contact for participants, parents and community members. They:

  • Plan, set up and pack down activities
  • Keep everyone safe by following guidelines
  • Solve problems if something goes wrong
  • Adjust activities to suit the group
  • Complete admin tasks like attendance

3. Program / activity team members

Team members help run activities and interact with participants. They:

  • Help set up and pack down
  • Follow safety guidelines
  • Support leaders and reinforce behaviour expectations
  • Encourage fun and participation
  • Complete checks and safety training within 8 weeks

4. Participants

Participants help make activities enjoyable and safe. They agree to:

  • Not take photos or screenshots without permission
  • Treat everyone fairly and listen to others
  • Be respectful and help everyone have fun
  • Follow instructions from leaders and helpers

5. Parents / guardians

Parents and guardians help reinforce good behaviour, we encourage them to talk about this while traveling to and from activities. We welcome open communication and feedback to improve our programs. When filling out permission forms, please share anything that helps us support your child or young person better.

6. Others on site

Other people on site - like staff from other services, community groups or volunteers - also help create a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

By working together, we make sure our people are safe, skilled and inclusive, creating programs where everyone belongs.
