Safeguarding at The Salvation Army

Safe programs

Where fun begins

Every program or activity has some risks. At The Salvation Army, we plan carefully to reduce risks and keep everyone safe, while still making activities fun and meaningful.

Before any program starts, our leaders complete an activity risk assessment. This means they think about possible risks and write down how to manage them. Here’s what we consider:

1. Location

  • Is the space safe, well-lit and big enough?
  • Can leaders see participants clearly?
  • Are there any work health and safety issues to fix?

2. Supervision

  • Will parents or guardians be on site?
  • Who can step in if something goes wrong?
  • Parent or guardian consent and permission forms are completed

3. Age range

  • Mixed age groups can have different needs and abilities
  • We set clear rules for games and activities to keep help different ages to participate safely together

4. Duration

  • Longer activities, overnight stays or offsite programs need extra planning
  • We make sure participants know what to expect and feel supported

5. Type of activity

  • Transport, swimming, physical games - each has its own risks
  • We check safety rules for each type of activity

6. Tools and equipment

  • Are the right tools and equipment provided and in good condition? (Example: helmets and covered shoes for rock climbing)

By planning ahead and listening to feedback, we make sure our programs are safe, fun and welcoming for everyone.
