The barracks are home to the 1st Brigade and the 1st Aviation Regiment. Robertson Barracks has a helicopter airfield, similar to Holsworthy Barracks. The barracks was named after Lieutenant General Sir Horace Robertson, commander of the 1st Armoured Division and 6th Division during the Second World War, and later Commander in Chief British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan.
The units currently located on Robertson Barracks are:
1st Combat Service Support Battalion
1st Combat Signals Regiment
1st Combat Engineer Regiment
5/7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment
8th/12th Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery

Before joining the Australian Army, I worked as a chemical plant operator and served in the British Army. Once I joined the Australian Army, I served in Darwin in 1st Aviation Regiment, Brigade HQ and Soldier Recovery Centre. After I discharged, I joined the Red Shield Defence Services in 2025.
My sponsor unit is 5/7 RAR has four infantry companies and a support company of Direct Fire Support Weapons, Reconnaissance, Mortar and Signals platoons. I serve additional units and the permanent contingent of US Marines (which can swell to 1000 during the dry season).

With a husband and son in the Australian Defence Force, I understand the struggles of defence families. When the opportunity arose to become a Sallyma’am, I jumped at the chance. I began in March 2025.
I am the Sallyma’am of 1st Combat Service Support Battalion but also support 5/7 RAR, 8/12 RAA, 1HB, 1MP, 1 AVN, 1CSR and 1CER and Marines when needed. I support these units when they go out to the range and on exercise — on or off base.
My role allows me to connect with and support soldiers without time constraints from a spiritual perspective over a cuppa and a biscuit, which I love.

It is a place to come and relax. There are movies to watch, all sorts of games to play, books to read, or somewhere to catch a few zzz's during lunch or a well-earned break. The relaxed atmosphere is felt throughout the building — with laughter around the game consoles (two Wii consoles, a PS2 and three large plasma screen TVs), fierce rivalry at the table tennis table, and the endless chatter of mates sorting out the troubles of the world, giving each other a ribbing, or just passing the time of day.
If you would prefer a bit of peace and quiet, down the corridor is the library and sitting area. You can read a book, peruse a magazine, play a game of chess or try your hand at Scrabble. Our building is large enough to cater for all these activities without interrupting your quiet time.
If you are going out bush for a time, why not come in and borrow a book? When you’re done, you can bring it back and swap it for another. We are happy to receive donations of books so if you have a few at home that you have read and would like to pass on to others, please feel free to drop them in. We’ll gladly take them off your hands and add them to our collection.
To top it off, we have a brew room complete with microwave and hot water ‘on tap’ for that much needed coffee or tea with a biscuit, and a fridge filled with soft drinks, chips and chocolates for those who need that sugar fix.
If there is a need for any office assistance, a ‘Sally Rep’ can offer a printer, scanner, photocopier and laminator to finalise any documents.
